BMI Limitations: What BMI Does Not Tell You
Body mass index, or BMI, compares weight with height and is commonly used as a population-level screening measure. It is not a complete measure of individual health.
BMI does not measure body composition
BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat or show where body fat is stored. Two people with the same BMI can have different body compositions.
BMI has context
Age, sex, muscle mass, family history, lifestyle and other health measures can provide important context. BMI categories should not be interpreted in isolation.
Why use BMI at all?
Despite its limitations, BMI can be a simple starting point for discussing weight-related health at a population level and alongside other measures.
Talk with a professional
If you are concerned about your weight or health, a qualified healthcare professional can consider your complete situation rather than relying on one number.
