Calories are a measure of energy. Your daily calorie needs depend on factors such as age, sex, body size, activity and individual circumstances. A calculator can provide a useful estimate, but it cannot know every factor that affects your actual energy needs.

How to Calculate Your Daily Calorie Needs

A common approach is to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and then account for daily activity. The resulting estimate is often called total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).

1. Estimate your BMR

BMR is an estimate of the energy your body uses at rest. Common equations use inputs such as age, sex, height and weight. BMR is a starting point rather than a complete measure of everything you burn during a normal day.

2. Account for activity

Walking, work, exercise and everyday movement increase energy expenditure. TDEE estimates combine resting needs with an activity estimate. Because activity levels can change from day to day, the result should be treated as a range or starting point rather than an exact number.

3. Understand maintenance calories

Estimated maintenance calories are the approximate amount of energy needed to maintain body weight over time under a given activity pattern. Real-world weight trends can be affected by water, food volume, exercise, sleep and other factors, so short-term changes do not always reflect changes in body fat.

4. Adjust based on longer-term trends

If your goal is to change your weight, use a calculator estimate as a starting point and pay attention to longer-term trends rather than reacting to a single day. Small, consistent adjustments are generally easier to evaluate than frequent large changes.

Calculator results are estimates

No calorie equation perfectly predicts an individual's energy needs. Use results as educational estimates. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or have specific nutritional needs, seek individualized guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.
