How to Calculate BMR
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is an estimate of the energy your body uses at rest to support essential functions such as breathing and circulation.
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation
For adults, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is commonly used as an estimate. For men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5. For women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161.
BMR vs. TDEE
BMR is a resting estimate. TDEE adds the energy associated with daily activity and is therefore more useful when estimating total daily calorie needs.
Why BMR is only an estimate
Real energy expenditure varies between people. Body composition, activity, health circumstances and other factors can affect energy needs.
